Resiliency Success Skills features5 Skills for Resilience –
Researchers have identified 5 teachable skills of resilience that are often
described as core abilities that help people adapt, recover, and grow through challenges.
1. Self-Awareness – Recognizing your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, and
understanding how they influence your responses to stress. This includes knowing your
strengths, limitations, and personal triggers.
2. Self-Regulation – Managing emotions, impulses, and reactions effectively, especially
under pressure. This skill involves staying calm, thinking clearly, and making deliberate
choices rather than reacting automatically.
3. Optimism – Maintaining a hopeful and realistic outlook, focusing on possibilities rather
than limitations. Optimism doesn’t ignore difficulties—it reframes them as challenges that
can be addressed.
4. Mental Agility – Seeing situations from multiple perspectives, being flexible in thinking,
and adapting strategies when circumstances change. This skill also includes problemsolving
and creative thinking.
5. Strengthening Connections – Building and maintaining supportive relationships and
seeking help when needed. Strong social connections provide emotional support,
practical help, and a sense of belonging.
