Fostering Connection, Resiliency and SEL Skills in Students

Dr. Melissa Mariani -Associate Professor & Doctoral Program Coordinator, Florida Atlantic
University/Department of Counselor Education
Dr. Greg Brigman -Emeritus Professor, Florida Atlantic University

Evidence-based SEL programs improve students’ resiliency skills and their long-term mental
health (Osher et al., 2010) and are particularly beneficial for adolescents with internalizing
symptoms (Weist et al., 2018). Student Success Skills for SEL Success (SSS-SEL), a new
iteration of Student Success Skills (SSS), teaches middle and high school students critical social-
emotional skills, concepts and strategies based on CASEL’s five competencies using a
multimodal approach. The presenter will cover details of the program and provide data from a
recently published study. In addition, a newly validated pre/post survey aligned with SSS-SEL
will be shared.
